I pledge
My head to clearer thinking
My heart to greater loyalty
My hands to larger service
My heath to better living
A Promise to 4-H.
4-H was where I learned how to be a friend, make friends, be away from home, how to take care of others. IT WAS SO important to my confidence and individuality AND learning that people different than myself are also amazing unique and love being in nature. This is a story or maybe many stories for another time….
Keeping to the prompt! It is also where I learned how to make friendship bracelets, a hobby I very low-key kept doing as an alternative to playing Gameboy SP (can you guess how old I am?).
To set the stage, 4-H Camp was a youth overnight camp I went to for one week a year in June from 3rd grade to 7th grade. I graduating to a counselor in training as an 8th grader and then a counselor from the ripe age of 14 to 18. Again, a priceless 9 weeks of my life.
During the week of camp, one would have around 12 activities you got to choose from. I, somewhere along the way, chose friendship bracelet making. Let me tell you it was not regular ol’ friendship bracelet making it was a fancy braided design that took 16 different strings tied together into a foam ‘wheel’. You would alternate which strings you would pull across the middle and the nice sturdy round chain would form from the center of wheel. Link of example below, I am just finding out they are called kumihimo bracelets. A traditional Japanese style of cord braiding. I’m going to read up more about this and tell you my findings and my feelings. Please join me!
Alright we are all briefly caught up and publicly taught? Leave a comment below about your friendship bracelet experiences/summer camp experiences, maybe we can all learn a little something new today.
